In 2013, the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology began a project to provide answers to the hundreds of north Alabama families with children who have undiagnosed genetic disorders.

Two out of every 100 children are born with intellectual or developmental delay, many of which arise from genetic factors. The vast majority of these families spend years seeking a specific diagnosis, but without resolution because current technologies are inadequate. The extended uncertainty of this process takes a terrible toll on families, adding to the already considerable medical, financial and emotional distress.

HudsonAlpha is on the cutting edge in leading this project. World-class research scientists are partnering with practicing physicians to move discovery in research directly to the affected patient. While the study has just begun yielding information, the results are quite promising. Early findings have shown that many families participating in the study will receive answers to questions that have been elusive for many years.
